เครื่องมือวัดความเร็วลม
ลม คือการเคลื่อนไหวของอากาศ ถ้าลมแรงก็หมายถึงว่ามวลของอากาศเคลื่อนตัวไปมากและเร็วในอุตุนิยมวิทยา การวัดลมจำต้องวัดทั้งทิศของลมและอัตราหรือความเร็วของลม สำหรับการวัดทิศของลมนั้นเราใช้ศรลม (wind vane) ส่วนการวัดความเร็วของลม เราใช้เครื่องมือที่เรียกว่า "อะนีมอมิเตอร์"(anemometer) ซึ่งมีหลายชนิด แต่ส่วนมากใช้แบบใบพัดหรือกังหัน หรือใช้แบบถ้วยกลมสามใบและมีก้านสามก้านต่อมารวมกันที่แกนกลาง จากแกนกลางจะมีแกนต่อลงมายังเบื้องล่าง เมื่อกังหันหมุนจะทำให้เกิดกระแสไฟฟ้า ซึ่งจะทำให้เข็มที่หน้าปัดชี้แสดงความเร็วของลมคล้ายๆ กับหน้าปัดที่บอกความเร็วของรถยนต์ การวัดความเร็วและทิศของลม อาจทำได้โดยใช้เครื่องมืออีกชนิดหนึ่งเรียกว่า "ใบพัดลม" ซึ่งสามารถวัดความเร็วและทิศได้พร้อมกัน ในการวัดความเร็วของลมมีหน่วยที่ใช้กันอยู่หลายหน่วย แล้วแต่ว่าผู้ใช้จะนิยมและสะดวกที่จะใช้หน่วยใด เช่น นอต หรือไมล์ทะเลต่อชั่วโมง กิโลเมตรต่อชั่วโมง ไมล์ (บก) ต่อชั่วโมง นอกจากเครื่องวัดลมชนิดดังกล่าวแล้ว ยังมีเครื่องบันทึกความเร็วและทิศของลมอยู่ตลอดเวลาด้วย เครื่องบันทึกลมนี้เรียกว่า อะนีมอกราฟ (anemograph) ซึ่งสามารถบันทึกความเร็วและทิศของลมได้ตามที่เราต้องการ
